WORKS ELABORATION:
This work is a combination of images of the sun from various cultures with reference to rock paintings and mural paintings, and it uses the expressional techniques of traditional murals, stone reliefs and traditional paintings as a reference for painting.
The overall structure is based on the story of the Archer and the Sun and gradually extends to the images of the sun and beliefs in sun deities around the world, from which we can see the general characteristics of the images of sun deities from different civilizations, as well as the similarities and commonalities of images of the sun in different regions. In this process, I expand my imagination and add small details to represent different legends. Perhaps these figurative images of the solar deity from ancient beliefs have really existed as a common reference object for several neighboring local civilizations. The golden crow shot down by the archer Hou Yi in ancient times may have been regarded as a sun deity in other places, which may be another form of cosmopolitanism.
TUTOR COMMENT:
Li Fengren has always had a keen interest in traditional Chinese culture, including ancient murals and myths and legends. In this work, he shows a fascination with texture and traces, as well as ancient mystical images. The theme of the work is the legends of the sun, which are not only greatly different from each other, but also have different degrees of similarities in various ancient civilizations. It’s an interesting idea to combine the story of the Archer and the Sun with images of the sun from different ancient civilizations. His work uses traditional materials such as toner and gold foil to describe a legend story of contemporary significance, presenting richly layered reconciliations and conflicts.
