WORKS ELABORATION:
“The Imitation Game” is a robotic installation that uses PoseNet pose detection technique to learn human body language. The body of the work is a robot in the form of a baby, which can detect and record body movements of the viewer and learn and imitate them through algorithm-driven motors. As the dataset expands and the algorithm iterates, it will learn more human body language from the viewers. In such a playful way and with a sense of absurdity, this work attempts to inspire a rethinking of the ethics of technology behind machine intelligence.
TUTOR COMMENT:
Li Hang’s “The Imitation Game” comes from his philosophical thinking about machine learning: what are the consciousness and emotional intelligence of a robot? The charm of this work is that “she” is not a robot, but a metaphor and a myth (Benjamin's theory of myth). Li Hang has created a “child” that we seem to have to take in, like the first time we take our child from the hands of a nurse, and we wonder: “Is this my child”? “The Imitation Game” can be seen as a mirror image of human beings, and in her presence, we may be narcissistic, self-questioning or self-blaming……Li Hang has constantly raised ethical issues of science and technology throughout his three years of study and practice.
